Deena Lee retired in April 2023 as the first female fire chief in the South Bay Region of Los Angeles County. At her time of appointment, she was the only female fire chief in Los Angeles, Orange, and Ventura Counties. After her retirement continues to inspire and empower others to overcome obstacles and meet their full potential. Lee started her fire career in El Segundo, CA, in 2003 after spending two years as a volunteer with La Habra Heights, CA, Fire Department and worked as an apprentice with La Verne, CA, Fire Department. She was promoted to captain in 2007, battalion chief in 2019, and fire chief in 2021. Lee is most proud of bringing the first “Fired Up! Girls Empowerment Camp” to El Segundo for youth ages 12-19. She is a California State Fire Marshal Instructor and has worked at El Camino Fire Academy since 2004. She has a bachelor’s degree in fire science and multiple certifications including Chief Fire Officer. Lee is a founding member of the nonprofit, Women’s Fire Alliance and served as vice-chair of the board of directors from 2018-2023.
