Steven Slagle, a retired Fire Captain from CAL FIRE with a career spanning several decades, began his journey in the fire service during his high school years through the Regional Occupational Program (ROP). Pursuing his education in Fire Science at a community college, he started as a FFI seasonal for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection in 1985.
Throughout his career, Steve's dedication led him to diverse roles, from Reserve Firefighter for the San Miguel Fire Protection District in San Diego County to a permanent Firefighter II for CAL Fire in the Riverside Unit. He excelled in various assignments, including working on Type I engines and serving in a Truck Company in the City of Moreno Valley.
His ascent continued with promotions to Fire Apparatus Engineer in 1995 and ultimately to Fire Captain in 2003. Steve's commitment extended beyond operational roles as he actively participated in his Local union, holding elected positions such as District Vice President, advocating for the improvement of wages, benefits, and working conditions for over 1000 firefighters.
Even after retiring in 2012, Steve remains deeply engaged in the fire service community. As a member of the California State Firefighters' Association (CSFA) since 1985, he currently serves on the Retiree Issues Committee and acts as the Chairperson. Steve's enduring passion for enhancing the fire service is evident in his ongoing involvement and commitment to the betterment of firefighter-related issues.
